Greetings and welcome to the Radical Love Project! We are happy to ring in the new year with the launch of this site and we are especially glad you are here. I thought I’d take the opportunity in my first post to tell you why I’m excited to be here with you. —CB
How did you get here?
I was so excited when Kristin invited me to be a part of this new endeavor. Since we met several years ago (how the time does fly!) we have shared so many conversations about our lived experiences, the perspectives we have formed along the way, the way our values have been shaped, and the political viewpoints that have evolved. I have watched with great respect and admiration as Kristin made the bold decision to enter politics, ran an authentic grassroots campaign that connected meaningfully with her community, defied all odds by besting a long-time incumbent, and used her elected position to unrelentingly challenge the political establishment on behalf of the constituents she served.
It has been great fun to be in Kristin’s corner and see/read of all her successes in the NYC political arena from my perch here in Los Angeles, and in our never-frequent-enough visits to each other’s cities for Broadway shows, Beyoncé, and Erykah Badu, among others. I also gained an appreciation for the challenges she faced as a disruptor within a long-established system that resists change with every bit of its might.
Given this understanding, I wasn’t surprised when Kristin shared that she intended to serve out the remainder of her term and not pursue re-election. She immediately spoke of finding a new outlet or creating a new platform that would take the core concept of radical love that defined her campaign and her tenure on the Council beyond the confines of electoral politics. When she asked me last fall to join her in this new endeavor, I said yes without hesitation. And now, here we are, ringing in 2024 with the goal of building a vibrant space and community together.
Where did you come from?
I come to the Radical Love Project from a few places and a wide variety of professional spaces. I’m a born and raised Midwesterner, the son of horse trainers who grew up traveling America’s interstate highways from the backseat of big trucks hauling bigger trailers full of beautiful Quarter and Paint horses to competitive events.
Despite early success and multiple state titles in the show ring (including two for poultry showmanship—perhaps a topic for a future post on an unusually light week), my passion for music became apparent around the age of ten. Although my family had no musical tradition, my mother, a skilled seamstress, enrolled me in a local performing arts academy and sewed costumes to offset the cost of my studies. It was through music that I was exposed to America’s great cities and the art they foster; first Chicago, then New York City, then Los Angeles. My childhood was a fascinating and compartmentalized experience of baling hay and digging wells to pay for dance shoes and musical theater workshops.
After completing my undergraduate degree I taught high school music for a number of years before returning to my alma mater to earn a Masters degree in Conducting. Following graduation I moved into the non-profit arts space, spending several years administering youth programming for a prominent historical preservation organization while moonlighting as a consultant and creative advisor for school music programs. Along the way I’ve performed countless symphony shows, jazz gigs, and alongside popular artists ranging from Kenny Rogers to Madonna and Cee-Lo Green.
For the past six years I’ve been living and working in Los Angeles, recently producing concert events in cities including Kyoto, Buenos Aires, Montreal, Dublin, London, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Athens, Berlin, Munich, Stockholm, Paris, and Prague. I’ve also been fortunate to continue my work as a professional vocalist, with appearances at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and international venues including the Salzburg Dom, the Bath Abbey, and the Salisbury Cathedral.
What’s your goal with the Radical Love Project?
I think the core values listed on this site speak clearly to our objectives—creating and fostering a space where complex, challenging, sometimes seemingly contradictory elements of left politics can be unpacked, analyzed, and placed in a useful context. The RadLove website will amplify the concepts of radical love that served as the foundation of Kristin’s political advocacy and infuse them into topics beyond the confines of the political spectrum.
Nice to meet you! What’s next?
In the coming weeks Kristin and I will be sharing more of our thoughts on key topics of the day. We’ll be introducing our social channels, where you’ll be able to engage with us and other members of the RadLove community, and share our message with your circles. And we’ll be asking for your feedback as we grow together holistically!
What’s most important is that you be sure to sign up for the RadLove mailing list so we can stay connected. We are here because we want you here with us, in community with us, winning hearts and changing minds with us.
I’m glad for the opportunity to share a little bit about myself and why I’m here. I know you’re here for many of the same reasons. As we celebrate the renewal that comes with each new year, I know that my 2024 will be remarkable because YOU’LL be here! Stay tuned, I look forward to connecting with you soon.
